Let’s talk Ayam Geprek! I realised many people which haven’t been living in Jogja still think that Ayam Geprek is the same as Ayam Penyet. So let’s discuss shortly the difference,  but before that where is Ayam Geprek from?

Ayam Geprek believe it or not is actually a Invention from Jogjakarta. Sound’s strange because normally the food in Jogja is famous for it’s sweet taste, but this might be the one and only spicy food from Jogja.

For Ayam Penyet you put the chicken into the mortar and smash it once or twice after that you have to put the sambal o top of it or on it’s side.
For Ayam Geprek the sambal has to made at first, normally you can choose how many chillis you wanne have in there. This put you in charge of how spicy your food becomes. After that you put also the chicken nto the mortar smash it and mix it up with the sambal, make sure that it’s full with sambal. Oh my good I am just getting hungry again writing this.

No. 1 Bu Rum

Ayam Geprek Bu Rum

This is the pioneer of Ayam Geprek. This lovely women introduced Ayam Geprek to the public in 2003. If you look around in Jogja this might be a revolution of the food offer in Jogja. Now almost everyone sells this product.

Besides the chicken [Ayam]  you can get Egg [Telor], fermented Soybean [Tempe], crispy fermented Soybean [Tempe crispy] and Tofu [Tahu]. This can all get smashed and mixed up with the chillie sauce [sambal]. Besides that you can get  Kuah Tongseng and  Kuah Sop [which are vegetable dishes]

Maybe the only negative fact about this warung is that it’s a Warung in a tent where the air can get quite hot and muggy. But besides that it’s tastyyyy!

Ayam Geprek Bu Rum is always full with Student’s and others so get there to the right time that you don’t have to wait to long for it.
There are already some more outlets of this Warung but I recommend you the one and only one, the original place where everything started.

No. 2 Bu Nanik

Just next to Bu Rum you will find Bu Made, so if one of them is to full with people just come to the other one.

The Menu is the same as at the other Ayam Geprek in this area. With each meal you will also get a Kuah Tongseng. Besides that you can choose bihun [small noodles] and buncis [ chickbeans]. Actually i went to this place on a rainy saturday, so it was not to busy here and i got the food quiet fast.

Price Range: 5.000 – 13.000 Rupiah

No. 3 Bu Made

Actually this is my favourite place to have a good Ayam Geprek with a nice breeze of fresh air.

It is just around 100 Meters to the south from Bu Rum and I think it’s just as good as Bu Rum. But besides a tent here you can also choose to sit next to it in front of a house which we can maybe call a terrace. Here at the terrace you don’t feel hot and have enough time to wait for your food which will not need to long. Here I tried my 35 Cabe Challenge but let me tell you it’s getting bitter if you eat to many chillies, check it out here.

The choice you have here is the same as at Bu Rum with Kua Tongseng and  Kuah Sayur as side dishes.

No. 4 Mas Kobis

The most famous Ayam Geprek for Student’s?
I don’t really know what make the food here so tasty because the place is in my opinion not the cleanest. But don’t worry at the new place it got already cleaner as at the old place. The people working here haven’t much changed since I visited it the last time, always good for a joke and enjoying their live. So don’t be confused when they joke around with you 😉

At Mas Kobis I love that we can also get eggplant into our mashed up Ayam Geprek. Besides that like at the other Warungs Egg, Tofu, Tempe and of course Chicken. But at this place we can just get the Geprek without any “side dishes”.

Is this maybe the Ayam Geprek in town with the most outlets? I am normally going to the one which is just next to the UNY. They just moved the place 50 meter down the road. Now it got a real roof and is much bigger as before. So if you are coming back to Jogja, now you will get a seat here.

Believe me Ayam Geprek is not getting boring. Here at AGM they use the topic “University” for selling their food. So you can choose between different packages and different classes which are the dishes you want to get smashed. You are boring with the crispy chicken for Ayam Geprek? Here they will go the extra mile for you, Crispy chicken, BBQ Chicken [Ayam Bakar] or the sBBQ Chicken with honey [Ayam Bakar Madu], which one do you want? And for everyone who can’t wait for the night just order a Ayam Kampus [University Slut], the Indonesians love to joke with word meanings.

Ayam Geprek Mahasiswa – How to order

The time you handle in your required classes you will get a “student card” with a typical Javanese Name on it. Hartono, Hartanto, Ayu? Whats your name today? You will be called out the time your class start’s. Now get your food and start! But before you start studying, choose your rice because here you have the best choice of rice. Normal white rice, red rice (which should be healty) or the tast Nasi Uduk which has it’s origin in Jakarta? I am definitely going for the Nasi Uduk this is the best mix you can get: Ayam Geprek with Nasi Uduk.

Ayam Geprek PREKSU

Another newer invention of Ayam Geprek is PREKSU. The name actually already describes what they are selling, Ayam Geprek and Milk [Susu]. This is a good match because we know that milk product’s can help us when our mouth feels like it want to explode.

Ayam Geprek PREKSU with cheese

Actually I haven’t tried the milk here because I love the spicy taste but there is something else that make me love this place. You can order your Chicken with Cheese. The sound may be a little bit strange but the spicy taste o the chicken and the salty taste of the cheese match like a goal in football. The prices are also very Student friendly like almost every Ayam Geprek. So if you are not used to spicy food, make sure you can get your milk here to neutralize the pain in your mouth.

This is also the place for you if you wanne try Ceker [Chicken feeds] or just enjoy Jamur Crispy [ Crispy Mushroom]

No.7 Ayam Geprek Mbok Moro

Can you imagine Ayam Geprek mixed up with the Sauce of Rendang or with Bolognese on Top? If you can’t imagine it you have to get here to see it with your own eyes! If you love toppings get here! This will bring you back on track when you are already boring with Ayam Geprek. My favourite is the Ayam Geprek with the Rendang sauce. One word to describe this Mixup: HEAVEN. I mean who not loves Rendang? And Ayam Geprek? Yeah this is a must try for you!

The outlets are normally clean and have a certain level of standards. It is build up a little bit like the international fast food seller, so you will not find it in tent’s but maybe in a mall soon. Actually this was also the first Ayam Geprek which entered a mall for a longer event.

Just the first outlet of Mbok Moro is a standard warung and also have different price level as the other outlets, so don’t be confused 😉
